India vs United States: Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Industrial Processes
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Industrial Processes over time
- India
- United States
How they compare
India currently reports 258.48 Mt CO2e against 155.72 Mt CO2e in United States, a difference of 102.76 Mt CO2e.
That makes India's figure about 1.7 times United States's.
The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was United States ahead.
India ranks 2nd and United States ranks 3rd of 203 countries.
Across the 6 decades both report, India averaged higher in 2 and United States in 4.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | India | United States | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 19.58 Mt CO2e | 137.81 Mt CO2e | 118.23 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 1980s | 29.96 Mt CO2e | 124.8 Mt CO2e | 94.84 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 1990s | 55.3 Mt CO2e | 150.5 Mt CO2e | 95.2 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 2000s | 92.21 Mt CO2e | 146.5 Mt CO2e | 54.28 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 2010s | 167.27 Mt CO2e | 144.24 Mt CO2e | 23.03 Mt CO2e | India |
| 2020s | 222.24 Mt CO2e | 158.36 Mt CO2e | 63.88 Mt CO2e | India |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from industrial processes including IPCC 2006 codes 2.A.1 Cement production, 2.A.2 Lime production, 2.A.3 Glass Production, 2.A.4 Other Process Uses of Carbonates, 2.B Chemical Industry, 2.C Metal Industry, 2.D Non-Energy Products from Fuels and Solvent Use, 2.E Electronics Industry, 2.F Product Uses as Substitutes for Ozone Depleting Substances, 2.G Other Product Manufacture and Use and 5.A Indirect N2O emissions from the atmospheric deposition of nitrogen in NOx and NH3. The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
