Canada vs European Union: Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Waste
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Waste over time
- Canada
- European Union
How they compare
European Union currently reports 2.24 Mt CO2e against 0.1026 Mt CO2e in Canada, a difference of 2.14 Mt CO2e.
That makes European Union's figure about 21.8 times Canada's.
Across all 55 years both countries report, European Union has been ahead every year.
Canada ranks 13th and European Union ranks 1st of 100 countries.
European Union has averaged higher in every one of the 6 decades both report.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Canada | European Union | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 0.0892 Mt CO2e | 1.9 Mt CO2e | 1.81 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 1980s | 0.1019 Mt CO2e | 2.12 Mt CO2e | 2.02 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 1990s | 0.1437 Mt CO2e | 2.29 Mt CO2e | 2.14 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 2000s | 0.1666 Mt CO2e | 2.57 Mt CO2e | 2.4 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 2010s | 0.1283 Mt CO2e | 2.59 Mt CO2e | 2.46 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 2020s | 0.1126 Mt CO2e | 2.35 Mt CO2e | 2.24 Mt CO2e | European Union |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
