How they compare

China currently reports 3.7 Mt CO2e against 3.29 Mt CO2e in Japan, a difference of 0.41 Mt CO2e.

That makes China's figure about 1.1 times Japan's.

The two have swapped places 3 times across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Japan ahead.

China ranks 1st and Japan ranks 2nd of 100 countries.

Across the 6 decades both report, China averaged higher in 1 and Japan in 5.

Head to head by decade

Decade China Japan Difference Ahead
1970s 0.1758 Mt CO2e 2.7 Mt CO2e 2.52 Mt CO2e Japan
1980s 0.2619 Mt CO2e 3.12 Mt CO2e 2.85 Mt CO2e Japan
1990s 0.4091 Mt CO2e 4.34 Mt CO2e 3.93 Mt CO2e Japan
2000s 0.8909 Mt CO2e 4.59 Mt CO2e 3.7 Mt CO2e Japan
2010s 2.91 Mt CO2e 3.84 Mt CO2e 0.9309 Mt CO2e Japan
2020s 3.55 Mt CO2e 3.38 Mt CO2e 0.172 Mt CO2e China

Averages of every year both report within each decade.

A measure of annual emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
