How they compare

Japan currently reports 3.29 Mt CO2e against 1.75 Mt CO2e in France, a difference of 1.54 Mt CO2e.

That makes Japan's figure about 1.9 times France's.

Across all 55 years both countries report, Japan has been ahead every year.

France ranks 3rd and Japan ranks 2nd of 100 countries.

Japan has averaged higher in every one of the 6 decades both report.

Head to head by decade

Decade France Japan Difference Ahead
1970s 1.08 Mt CO2e 2.7 Mt CO2e 1.62 Mt CO2e Japan
1980s 1.18 Mt CO2e 3.12 Mt CO2e 1.94 Mt CO2e Japan

A measure of annual emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
