How they compare

Portugal currently reports 4.92 Mt CO2e against 4.3 Mt CO2e in Iraq, a difference of 0.62 Mt CO2e.

That makes Portugal's figure about 1.1 times Iraq's.

The two have swapped places 5 times across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Iraq ahead.

Iraq ranks 94th and Portugal ranks 91st of 201 countries.

Across the 6 decades both report, Iraq averaged higher in 1 and Portugal in 5.

Head to head by decade

Decade Iraq Portugal Difference Ahead
1970s 4.67 Mt CO2e 4.52 Mt CO2e 0.1523 Mt CO2e Iraq
1980s 4.1 Mt CO2e 5.18 Mt CO2e 1.08 Mt CO2e Portugal
1990s 3.45 Mt CO2e 5.2 Mt CO2e 1.75 Mt CO2e Portugal
2000s 3.56 Mt CO2e 4.86 Mt CO2e 1.3 Mt CO2e Portugal
2010s 4.29 Mt CO2e 4.89 Mt CO2e 0.6052 Mt CO2e Portugal
2020s 4.19 Mt CO2e 5.08 Mt CO2e 0.8933 Mt CO2e Portugal

Averages of every year both report within each decade.

A measure of annual emissions of methane (CH4), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the agricultural sector. This includes emissions from livestock (IPCC 2006 codes 3.A.1 (enteric fermentation, 3.a.2 (manure management) and crops (IPCC 2006 codes 3.C.1 Emissions from biomass burning, 3.C.7 Rice cultivations). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
