Canada vs Nigeria: Methane (CH4) emissions from Waste
Methane (CH4) emissions from Waste over time
- Canada
- Nigeria
How they compare
Nigeria currently reports 33.33 Mt CO2e against 28.85 Mt CO2e in Canada, a difference of 4.48 Mt CO2e.
That makes Nigeria's figure about 1.2 times Canada's.
The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Canada ahead.
Canada ranks 10th and Nigeria ranks 8th of 203 countries.
Across the 6 decades both report, Canada averaged higher in 5 and Nigeria in 1.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Canada | Nigeria | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 19.53 Mt CO2e | 5.86 Mt CO2e | 13.67 Mt CO2e | Canada |
| 1980s | 23.84 Mt CO2e | 7.83 Mt CO2e | 16.01 Mt CO2e | Canada |
| 1990s | 26.27 Mt CO2e | 10.23 Mt CO2e | 16.04 Mt CO2e | Canada |
| 2000s | 28.62 Mt CO2e | 14.81 Mt CO2e | 13.81 Mt CO2e | Canada |
| 2010s | 28.02 Mt CO2e | 22.75 Mt CO2e | 5.26 Mt CO2e | Canada |
| 2020s | 28.14 Mt CO2e | 31.13 Mt CO2e | 2.99 Mt CO2e | Nigeria |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of methane (CH4), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
