China vs World: Methane (CH4) emissions from Waste
Methane (CH4) emissions from Waste over time
- China
- World
How they compare
World currently reports 1,652 Mt CO2e against 195.67 Mt CO2e in China, a difference of 1,456 Mt CO2e.
That makes World's figure about 8.4 times China's.
Across all 55 years both countries report, World has been ahead every year.
China ranks 1st and World ranks 1st of 203 countries.
World has averaged higher in every one of the 6 decades both report.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | China | World | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 93.74 Mt CO2e | 939.74 Mt CO2e | 846.01 Mt CO2e | World |
| 1980s | 110.06 Mt CO2e | 1,098 Mt CO2e | 987.49 Mt CO2e | World |
| 1990s | 126.11 Mt CO2e | 1,211 Mt CO2e | 1,085 Mt CO2e | World |
| 2000s | 161.66 Mt CO2e | 1,320 Mt CO2e | 1,158 Mt CO2e | World |

| 2020s | 241.97 Mt CO2e | 1,665 Mt CO2e | 1,423 Mt CO2e | World |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of methane (CH4), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
