How they compare

Malawi currently reports 1.25 Mt CO2e against 1.16 Mt CO2e in Ireland, a difference of 0.09 Mt CO2e.

That makes Malawi's figure about 1.1 times Ireland's.

The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Ireland ahead.

Ireland ranks 114th and Malawi ranks 111th of 203 countries.

Ireland has averaged higher in every one of the 6 decades both report.

Head to head by decade

Decade Ireland Malawi Difference Ahead
1970s 1.78 Mt CO2e 0.3442 Mt CO2e 1.43 Mt CO2e Ireland
1980s 1.97 Mt CO2e 0.3742 Mt CO2e 1.6 Mt CO2e Ireland
1990s 2.05 Mt CO2e 0.4518 Mt CO2e 1.6 Mt CO2e Ireland
2000s 2.68 Mt CO2e 0.5959 Mt CO2e 2.09 Mt CO2e Ireland
2010s 2.22 Mt CO2e 0.8681 Mt CO2e 1.35 Mt CO2e Ireland
2020s 1.57 Mt CO2e 1.17 Mt CO2e 0.3977 Mt CO2e Ireland

Averages of every year both report within each decade.

A measure of annual emissions of methane (CH4), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
