Japan vs Small states: Methane (CH4) emissions from Waste
Methane (CH4) emissions from Waste over time
- Japan
- Small states
How they compare
Small states currently reports 9.47 Mt CO2e against 5.74 Mt CO2e in Japan, a difference of 3.73 Mt CO2e.
That makes Small states's figure about 1.7 times Japan's.
The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Japan ahead.
Japan ranks 47th and Small states ranks 44th of 203 countries.
Across the 6 decades both report, Japan averaged higher in 4 and Small states in 2.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Japan | Small states | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 17.55 Mt CO2e | 5.06 Mt CO2e | 12.5 Mt CO2e | Japan |
| 1980s | 18.21 Mt CO2e | 6.1 Mt CO2e | 12.11 Mt CO2e | Japan |
| 1990s | 17.15 Mt CO2e | 7.05 Mt CO2e | 10.1 Mt CO2e | Japan |
| 2000s | 11.46 Mt CO2e | 9.06 Mt CO2e | 2.4 Mt CO2e | Japan |
| 2010s | 7.57 Mt CO2e | 9.94 Mt CO2e | 2.37 Mt CO2e | Small states |
| 2020s | 6.01 Mt CO2e | 9.44 Mt CO2e | 3.43 Mt CO2e | Small states |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of methane (CH4), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
