How they compare

Iran currently reports 1.2 Mt CO2e against 1.08 Mt CO2e in Nigeria, a difference of 0.12 Mt CO2e.

That makes Iran's figure about 1.1 times Nigeria's.

The two have swapped places 5 times across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Nigeria ahead.

Iran ranks 13th and Nigeria ranks 16th of 197 countries.

Across the 6 decades both report, Iran averaged higher in 5 and Nigeria in 1.

Head to head by decade

Decade Iran Nigeria Difference Ahead

A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the building sector (subsector of the energy sector) including IPCC 2006 codes 1.A.4 Residential and other sectors, 1.A.5 Non-Specified. The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
