Canada vs North America: Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Industrial Processes
Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Industrial Processes over time
- Canada
- North America
How they compare
North America currently reports 37.48 Mt CO2e against 3.58 Mt CO2e in Canada, a difference of 33.9 Mt CO2e.
That makes North America's figure about 10.5 times Canada's.
Across all 55 years both countries report, North America has been ahead every year.
Canada ranks 16th and North America ranks 18th of 203 countries.
North America has averaged higher in every one of the 6 decades both report.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Canada | North America | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 12.2 Mt CO2e | 124.42 Mt CO2e | 112.22 Mt CO2e | North America |
| 1980s | 13.05 Mt CO2e | 92.92 Mt CO2e | 79.87 Mt CO2e | North America |
| 1990s | 12.35 Mt CO2e | 68.84 Mt CO2e | 56.49 Mt CO2e | North America |
| 2000s | 4.75 Mt CO2e | 47.41 Mt CO2e | 42.66 Mt CO2e | North America |
| 2010s | 3.31 Mt CO2e | 37.81 Mt CO2e | 34.5 Mt CO2e | North America |
| 2020s | 3.44 Mt CO2e | 37.28 Mt CO2e | 33.84 Mt CO2e | North America |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from industrial processes including IPCC 2006 codes 2.A.1 Cement production, 2.A.2 Lime production, 2.A.3 Glass Production, 2.A.4 Other Process Uses of Carbonates, 2.B Chemical Industry, 2.C Metal Industry, 2.D Non-Energy Products from Fuels and Solvent Use, 2.E Electronics Industry, 2.F Product Uses as Substitutes for Ozone Depleting Substances, 2.G Other Product Manufacture and Use and 5.A Indirect N2O emissions from the atmospheric deposition of nitrogen in NOx and NH3). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
