Brazil vs United States: Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Waste
Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Waste over time
- Brazil
- United States
How they compare
United States currently reports 9.94 Mt CO2e against 3.82 Mt CO2e in Brazil, a difference of 6.12 Mt CO2e.
That makes United States's figure about 2.6 times Brazil's.
Across all 55 years both countries report, United States has been ahead every year.
Brazil ranks 5th and United States ranks 4th of 204 countries.
United States has averaged higher in every one of the 6 decades both report.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Brazil | United States | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 1.08 Mt CO2e | 4.47 Mt CO2e | 3.39 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 1980s | 1.43 Mt CO2e | 5.04 Mt CO2e | 3.61 Mt CO2e | United States |

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
