How they compare

Indonesia currently reports 3.79 Mt CO2e against 2.47 Mt CO2e in Japan, a difference of 1.32 Mt CO2e.

That makes Indonesia's figure about 1.5 times Japan's.

The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Japan ahead.

Indonesia ranks 5th and Japan ranks 8th of 203 countries.

Across the 6 decades both report, Indonesia averaged higher in 2 and Japan in 4.

Head to head by decade

Decade Indonesia Japan Difference Ahead
1970s 0.7926 Mt CO2e 2.19 Mt CO2e 1.4 Mt CO2e Japan
1980s 1.21 Mt CO2e 2.54 Mt CO2e 1.32 Mt CO2e Japan
1990s 1.76 Mt CO2e 2.8 Mt CO2e 1.04 Mt CO2e Japan

A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
