How they compare

Russia currently reports 3.08 Mt CO2e against 2.47 Mt CO2e in Japan, a difference of 0.61 Mt CO2e.

That makes Russia's figure about 1.2 times Japan's.

The two have swapped places 2 times across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was Russia ahead.

Japan ranks 8th and Russia ranks 6th of 203 countries.

Across the 6 decades both report, Japan averaged higher in 4 and Russia in 2.

Head to head by decade

Decade Japan Russia Difference Ahead
1970s 2.19 Mt CO2e 2.12 Mt CO2e 0.0684 Mt CO2e Japan
1980s 2.54 Mt CO2e 2.28 Mt CO2e 0.2579 Mt CO2e Japan
1990s 2.8 Mt CO2e 2.23 Mt CO2e 0.5709 Mt CO2e Japan
2000s 2.66 Mt CO2e 2.28 Mt CO2e 0.3832 Mt CO2e Japan
2010s 2.49 Mt CO2e 2.61 Mt CO2e 0.1217 Mt CO2e Russia
2020s 2.46 Mt CO2e 2.95 Mt CO2e 0.498 Mt CO2e Russia

Averages of every year both report within each decade.

A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
