Sub-Saharan Africa vs United States: Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Waste
Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Waste over time
- Sub-Saharan Africa
- United States
How they compare
Sub-Saharan Africa currently reports 13.02 Mt CO2e against 9.94 Mt CO2e in United States, a difference of 3.08 Mt CO2e.
That makes Sub-Saharan Africa's figure about 1.3 times United States's.
The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was United States ahead.
Sub-Saharan Africa ranks 21st and United States ranks 3rd of 45 groups.
Across the 6 decades both report, Sub-Saharan Africa averaged higher in 2 and United States in 4.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Sub-Saharan Africa | United States | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 2.81 Mt CO2e | 4.47 Mt CO2e | 1.66 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 1980s | 3.71 Mt CO2e | 5.04 Mt CO2e | 1.33 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 1990s | 5.1 Mt CO2e | 6.3 Mt CO2e | 1.2 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 2000s | 7.21 Mt CO2e | 7.79 Mt CO2e | 0.5757 Mt CO2e | United States |
| 2010s | 10.32 Mt CO2e | 8.85 Mt CO2e | 1.47 Mt CO2e | Sub-Saharan Africa |
| 2020s | 12.43 Mt CO2e | 9.77 Mt CO2e | 2.66 Mt CO2e | Sub-Saharan Africa |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the waste sector. This includes emissions from solid waste (IPCC 2006 codes 4.A Solid Waste Disposal, 4.B Biological Treatment of Solid Waste, 4.C Incineration and Open Burning of Waste) and wastewater treatment (IPCC 2006 code 4.D Wastewater Treatment and Discharge). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
