Americas vs USSR: Nutrient balance — Cropland nitrogen
Nutrient balance — Cropland nitrogen over time
- Americas
- USSR
How they compare
Americas currently reports 17.31 million t against 12.20 million t in USSR, a difference of 5.11 million t.
That makes Americas's figure about 1.4 times USSR's.
The two have swapped places 10 times across 31 shared years of data; in 1961 it was USSR ahead.
Americas ranks 5th and USSR ranks 4th of 32 groups.
USSR has averaged higher in every one of the 4 decades both report.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | Americas | USSR | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1960s | 4.78 million t | 5.49 million t | 710,807 t | USSR |
| 1970s | 9.35 million t | 9.85 million t | 494,606 t | USSR |
| 1980s | 11.60 million t | 14.43 million t | 2.83 million t | USSR |
| 1990s | 11.79 million t | 12.21 million t | 420,350 t | USSR |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
The Cropland Nutrient balance domain contains information on the flows of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from mineral fertilizer, manure applied, atmospheric deposition, crop removal, and biological fixation over cropland and per unit area of cropland. The flows are aggregated to total inputs and total outputs, from which the overall nutrient balance and nutrient use efficiency on cropland are calculated. Statistics are disseminated in units of tonnes and in kg/ha, as appropriate. Nutrient use efficiency is expressed as a fraction (%).
