European Union vs India: Total greenhouse gas emissions excluding LULUCF
Total greenhouse gas emissions excluding LULUCF over time
- European Union
- India
How they compare
India currently reports 4,371 Mt CO2e against 3,165 Mt CO2e in European Union, a difference of 1,206 Mt CO2e.
That makes India's figure about 1.4 times European Union's.
The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was European Union ahead.
European Union ranks 27th and India ranks 3rd of 47 groups.
Across the 6 decades both report, European Union averaged higher in 5 and India in 1.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | European Union | India | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 4,953 Mt CO2e | 802.45 Mt CO2e | 4,150 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 1980s | 5,098 Mt CO2e | 1,126 Mt CO2e | 3,972 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 1990s | 4,608 Mt CO2e | 1,570 Mt CO2e | 3,038 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 2000s | 4,477 Mt CO2e | 2,133 Mt CO2e | 2,344 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 2010s | 3,945 Mt CO2e | 3,238 Mt CO2e | 706.24 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 2020s | 3,368 Mt CO2e | 3,944 Mt CO2e | 576.28 Mt CO2e | India |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of the six greenhouse gases (GHG) covered by the Kyoto Protocol (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulphurhexafluoride (SF6)) from the energy, industry, waste, and agriculture sectors, standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values. This measure excludes GHG fluxes caused by Land Use Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF), as these fluxes have larger uncertainties. The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
