How they compare

India currently reports 3,721 Mt CO2e against 2,995 Mt CO2e in European Union, a difference of 726 Mt CO2e.

That makes India's figure about 1.2 times European Union's.

The two have swapped places 1 time across 24 shared years of data; in 2000 it was European Union ahead.

European Union ranks 1st and India ranks 3rd of 2 groups.

Across the 3 decades both report, European Union averaged higher in 2 and India in 1.

Head to head by decade

Decade European Union India Difference Ahead
2000s 4,111 Mt CO2e 1,930 Mt CO2e 2,180 Mt CO2e European Union
2010s 3,618 Mt CO2e 2,905 Mt CO2e 713.19 Mt CO2e European Union
2020s 3,199 Mt CO2e 3,352 Mt CO2e 152.71 Mt CO2e India

Averages of every year both report within each decade.

A measure of annual emissions of the six greenhouse gases (GHG) covered by the Kyoto Protocol (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)) from the energy, industry, waste, agriculture, and land use, land use changes, and forestry (LULUCF) sectors, standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values. The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
