China vs European Union: Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Agriculture
Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Agriculture over time
- China
- European Union
How they compare
China currently reports 249.49 Mt CO2e against 138.22 Mt CO2e in European Union, a difference of 111.27 Mt CO2e.
That makes China's figure about 1.8 times European Union's.
The two have swapped places 1 time across 55 shared years of data; in 1970 it was European Union ahead.
China ranks 1st and European Union ranks 1st of 201 countries.
Across the 6 decades both report, China averaged higher in 4 and European Union in 2.
Head to head by decade
| Decade | China | European Union | Difference | Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s | 91.07 Mt CO2e | 171.51 Mt CO2e | 80.44 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 1980s | 151.31 Mt CO2e | 192.89 Mt CO2e | 41.58 Mt CO2e | European Union |
| 1990s | 219.65 Mt CO2e | 164.85 Mt CO2e | 54.8 Mt CO2e | China |
| 2000s | 256.75 Mt CO2e | 154.88 Mt CO2e | 101.87 Mt CO2e | China |
| 2010s | 253.74 Mt CO2e | 155.41 Mt CO2e | 98.34 Mt CO2e | China |
| 2020s | 240.1 Mt CO2e | 144.77 Mt CO2e | 95.34 Mt CO2e | China |
Averages of every year both report within each decade.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the agricultural sector. This includes emissions from livestock (IPCC 2006 codes 3.A.1 (enteric fermentation, 3.a.2 (manure management) and crops (IPCC 2006 codes 3.C.1 Emissions from biomass burning, 3.C.2 Liming, 3.C.3 Urea application, 3.C.4 Direct N2O Emissions from managed soils, 3.C.5 Indirect N2O Emissions from managed soils, 3.C.6 Indirect N2O Emissions from manure management, 3.C.7 Rice cultivations). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
